Emmalin Pierre Sworn In as Opposition Leader

NNP Communications

A Historic Swearing-In

On March 6, 2025, Hon. Emmalin Pierre was officially sworn in as the Leader of the Opposition by Governor General Dame Cécile La Grenade. The ceremony marked another historic milestone for the New National Party and for Grenada — Pierre becomes the first female NNP leader to serve in the role of Opposition Leader.

The swearing-in was attended by senior party members including Kate Lewis Peters and Dr. Clarice Modeste-Curwen, both of whom have played pivotal roles in the NNP's history and in public service.

Endorsed by Dr. Keith Mitchell

In the lead-up to the ceremony, former Prime Minister and longstanding NNP leader Dr. Keith Mitchell publicly endorsed Pierre's leadership, expressing confidence in her ability to guide the party forward and hold the government accountable on behalf of the Grenadian people.

"Emmalin Pierre has demonstrated the qualities of leadership, vision, and dedication that the NNP has always stood for," Dr. Mitchell said. "I have every confidence that she will serve the people of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique with distinction."

A New Phase for the Opposition

Pierre's appointment formalises the NNP's transition to a new generation of leadership while maintaining the institutional strength that has defined the party for decades. As Opposition Leader, Pierre will:

  • Lead parliamentary scrutiny of government policy and spending
  • Champion the concerns of Grenadians who feel unheard by the current administration
  • Present credible alternatives on issues from economic management to social development
  • Strengthen the NNP's presence in constituencies across all three islands

Looking Ahead

In brief remarks following the ceremony, Pierre thanked the Governor General, Dr. Mitchell, and the wider NNP family for their support and confidence.

"This is not about one person. It is about a party and a people who are ready for better," Pierre said. "We will be a constructive, principled, and vigorous opposition — because Grenadians deserve nothing less."

The swearing-in comes just months after Pierre was elected NNP Political Leader at the party's December 2024 convention, signalling a period of renewal and momentum for the party as it prepares for the next general election.
