Women Leading the Way

The New National Party's Women's Arm held its 2025 convention on February 16, bringing together women from constituencies across Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique. The convention demonstrated the continued strength and engagement of the party's women's wing under the NNP's new leadership structure.

Delegates gathered to discuss the role of women in national development, strategies for community outreach, and how the Women's Arm can contribute to the party's preparations for the next general election.

Dr. Mitchell Sounds the Alarm on Government Borrowing

A highlight of the convention was an address by former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, who used the occasion to issue a sharp critique of the current government's fiscal plans.

Dr. Mitchell took aim at the government's announcement to borrow EC$725 million to fund projects in 2025, warning that such a move would have serious consequences for the country's debt profile.

"This level of borrowing would cause the debt-to-GDP ratio to jump overnight," Mitchell cautioned. "We must ask ourselves — is this responsible stewardship of our nation's finances, or is it reckless spending dressed up as development?"

He urged Grenadians to pay close attention to the government's fiscal decisions, arguing that excessive borrowing today would burden future generations with debt they did not create.

Empowering Women in Political Life

Convention organisers emphasised that the Women's Arm is not simply a support structure for the broader party — it is a driving force in its own right. Speakers highlighted the growing number of women taking on leadership roles within the NNP, from constituency caretakers to national office holders.

"The strength of any political party is measured by how seriously it takes the voices of its women," one delegate remarked. "In the NNP, we are not on the sidelines — we are at the table."

Looking Ahead

The convention concluded with a renewed commitment to grassroots mobilisation, voter education, and community service. The Women's Arm pledged to increase its visibility in constituencies across the tri-island state and to play a leading role in the NNP's campaign readiness.

The 2025 convention served as a reminder that the NNP's strength lies not only in its political leadership, but in the dedication of its members at every level.
